Learning Ally helps students learn to read
Literacy Programs
Learning Ally
Learning Ally, an audio book subscription, provides equitable access to assigned and independent reading materials for students with difficulty reading grade-level or assigned texts. Our feedback indicates that this program has helped open the world of literature to some of our younger students. For others at the secondary level, Learning Ally has allowed them equitable access to the novels assigned in their ELA classes. In the 2022 pilot program students read over 36,000 pages in 564 hours of reading!” In its second year, we are proud to say that Learning Ally is offered district-wide.
Curriculum Adoption Support
Professional development for curriculum enables the district to accelerate the State’s 17-year curriculum adoption timeline and purchase new text and materials at seven to ten-year intervals, ensuring our students learn from relevant materials that align with state and national standards. A new comprehensive writing curriculum supported by the Issaquah Schools Foundation equips students with first-rate writing skills. Implemented throughout the district, the curriculum breaks writing into manageable steps and helps students identify and master specific strategies. Foundation funding provides residencies to help K-8 teachers strengthen their writing instruction. Working with nationally renowned consultants, teachers experience instruction from a student’s perspective and practicing the strategies they will bring to their classrooms.
Elementary Literacy Adoption
Literacy Funding
During the 2020-2021 school year, the Foundation donated $128,000 to support literacy:
• $10,000 for Library Books
The Foundation asks the librarians at each school to give their wish list and purchases books for every school library to help enrich the collection of materials offered in each building.
• $25,000 for Diverse Representation Books
To be sure that each elementary classroom has a range of books helping our diverse population feel a greater sense of belonging.
• $1500 for Pre-K Books
Books to help foster a love of reading for our youngest readers.
Over our 36 years, the Foundation has invested over $600,000]for literacy support in our district.
